For the 5th Episode of Bravo's "Project Runway" Season 19, we had two VERY SPECIAL guests on the set: Figure Skating Royalty, Tara Lipinski, and Johnny Weir! While we filmed the season (and episode) during the height of Summer 2021, we knew that this would air around the time the Beijing 2022 Olympics media blitz would be beginning (this past Fall).
Season 19 Project Runway Episode 5
As part of network collab (NBC airs the Olympics, and Bravo Network is part of the NBC/Universal family), the "powers at be" decided to have one of our Design Challenges for this season involve the Olympics somehow...and naturally, why not have our season's designers create outfits for (Drum roll!) Olympic champion Tara Lipinski and 2-time Olympian Johnny Weir! Y'all may know that I am a BIG figure skating fan and love blogging about figure skating costumes right here on my "Ice Style" blogs. And if you are a TRUE "Project Runway" fan, you might remember when I was on, back in Season 2, we had the challenge to design a skating costume for Sasha Cohen and I was literally, the only one who knew who she was and naturally, acted like a silly fanboy! So...when I found out that Tara Lipinski AND Johnny Weir would be on our set, I DIED!
Even though I was trying to remain as professional as I could be (not much!) as a Consulting Producer for the show, I could not contain my excitement when they walked on the set. I had to say "hello" like a silly SUPERFAN (I am sure they had no clue of who I was, what I did for the show, and more importantly why I was freaking out!). After the requisite "Can I get a selfie with you guys?", it was time for them to get to work...
This week's episode - and Challenge - was to design an outfit for both Tara and Johnny to wear for their ON AIR commentary/appearance during the Beijing 2022 Olympics. If you follow figure skating, whenever they do their skating commentary, both Tara and Johnny are obviously known for their insightful expertise, witty thoughts on skating, and also, their fashion--especially Johnny!
