Presenting Costumes!--Nick Verreos, at the Opening Night Party for the "Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

Back in March, the highly anticipated "Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition returned to the FIDM Museum! The Exhibition, which for over 30 years (!) has showcased motion picture costume design (traditionally to coincide with the Academy Awards) took a hiatus due to COVID last year, but this year, it was BACK! This year's exhibition features the FIVE Academy Award Nominees for Best Costume Design from the films "Cruella", "Cyrano", "Dune", "Nightmare Alley", and "Westside Story", as well as costumes from 17 other films...in total 70+ costumes on display, and runs until June 4th...

"Cruella", Costume Designer Jenny Beavan--The costume designer won her third Academy Award for her 1970's London Punk-inspired costumes--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

The "Fire" Dress from "Cruella", Costume Designer Jenny Beavan--This gorgeous gown was inspired by the 1955 "Tree Ball Gown"(named after client Mariette Peabody Tree) by American couturier Charles James (left photo)-- "Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

"Westside Story", Costume Designer Paul Tazewell--The yellow dress worn by actress Ariana DeBose (far left) was colored lilac in the original 1961 film. Tazewell decided to make it sun-like yellow for the remake to signify that her character "Anita" was the "Center of the Neighborhood" with everything and everybody gravitating towards her, like the sun--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

"Nightmare Alley", Costume Designer Luis Sequeira--The seedy Carnival world and elegant early 1940s NY city world are showcased through Sequeira's costumes. "Dune", Costume Designers Jacqueline West, Robert Morgan--The costumes from "Dune" were some of my FAVORITE from this past year's films. According to Jacqueline West, there are many inspirations for the film's costumes including the Medieval Times, The Templars, "Lawrence of Arabia", as well as paintings by Velasquez, Giotto, and even Spanish couturier Cristobal Balenciaga--"Art of Costume in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

"Cyrano", Costume Designers Massimo Cantini Parrini and Jacqueline Durran--Durran designed the costumed for the leading actress (left), while Cantini Parrini did the rest of the film's costumes. According to designer Massimo Cantini Parrini, the costumes were color divided depending on their classes; the nobles were in jewel tones such as emeralds, golds, and bronzes, and burgundy...while the bourgeoisie and peasant classes were in earth tones--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

"Tragedy of Macbeth", Costume Designer Mary Zophres--Zophres said that Lady Macbeth's (center front) structured silhouettes were inspired by chess pieces, and of note, the gorgeous black-and-gold star fabric on Macbeth's cape (left, back) came from the Italian fashion house of Valentino--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

"The French Dispatch", Costume Designer Milena Canonaro--Tilda Swinton's marigold-colored caftan in the back is a favorite of mine!--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

"The Eyes of Tammy Faye", Costume Designers Mitchell Travers--The red dress above was from the scene featuring the infamous Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker "Nightline" interview from 1987--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

"Respect", Costume Designer Clint Ramos--The blush-colored-and-pearl studded one on the right was the iconic "Amsterdam Concert" Dress, even though the original one worn by Aretha Franklin was gold (and bought off-the-rack from Saks)--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
