ICE STYLE.....2023 U.S. Figure Skating Championships COSTUMES: The WOMEN!

Costume Stars on Ice--Senior Women Skaters at the 2023 U.S. Figure Skating Championships San Jose (L to R) Josephine Lee, Bradie Tennell, Isabeau Levito, and Bradie Tennell

This past week was the 2023 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. They were held in San Jose California and I had the pleasure of attending over the weekend, along with my Skating Fan Partner-in-Crime (and hubby) David Paul.

Skating Boys--Nick Verreos and David Paul at the 2023 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, SAP Center San Jose

We both LOVE figure skating and were excited that the Nationals were being held in San Jose--a short flight from our L.A. home so...we had to buy tickets and attend!

Nick Verreos with skating fans (and fans of "Project Runway" and my blog) from South Dakota (L) and Designer/Owner of The Well Dressed Skater (R)--SAP Center San Jose

As we spent many hours in the Arena watching the competitions, I ran into several fans of figure skating and more importantly, my Figure Skating Costumes BLOG here. They all asked if I was going to do a Blog Post so...here we go:

Let's start with some of my faves of Women's Costumes:

Isabeau Levito, Free Skate to Dulsea Si Tandra Mea Fiara (My Sweet and Tender Beast) by Catalina Caraus, Eugen Doga--Isabeau took the Gold at the 2023 U.S. Nationals and she was perfection! The costume above is what she wore for her Free Skate. I loved the ombre-shaded blue design which featured a split skirt, and hints of hand-painted feathers, highlighted by gold applique and sequins throughout. The costume was modern, elegant, and looked high-end couture.

Short Program to Una Noche Mas by Yasmin Levy--I also loved this Spanish-inspired costume that she wore for her Short Program. As we all know, the whole black and red flamenco diva look is tried and true and is difficult to refresh, but here it was done with delicate style touches. I thought the asymmetrical neckline and hem, nude paneling, and sequined neck were quite chic and "adult" for her but my favorite details were those fluttering red petals that were delicately sewn as if falling on her.

Bradie Tennell Short Program to Michigan 7 by Kirill Richter--The music is a haunting piano piece and her costume was perfect for it. I loved the modern, clean lines. When Bradie came out on the ice, the black-and-yellow-ombre-dyed costume made for a stark and very chic contrast to the white ice she was skating on. I thought the silhouette was perfect for her long neck and lean figure.

Free Skate to Selections from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi--For her Free Skate, Bradie wore this very pretty costume featuring blue, lavender, red, and yellow hues with sparkling crystal stones throughout, created by French company Astraee Couture. I liked how the top had what looked like lightning exploding from the stones and especially appreciated the beautiful sequined back detail.

Amber Glenn Free Skate to Without You by Ursine Vulpine and Annaca--Another favorite costume from the 2023 U.S. Nationals was the one worn by Amber Glenn for her Free Skate. The design was ethereal with its delicately draped merlot red bodice, and grey-blue shaded floaty skirt. The extra details of crystals, front criss-cross straps, and wristband...as well as her braided hairstyle finished the look beautifully.

Short Program to Hit the Road Jack (RayCharles Cover) by 2WEI Featured Artist Bri Bryant--Amber looked HOT in this bodysuit design worn for her Short Program. I loved how modern and rock & roll the look was, especially with the intricate sequined "swirls" and sheer panels. This was almost something I could see in a Versace runway show; she was ready to slay the ice in this design--and with that FIERCE eyeliner and slick ponytail!

Josephine Lee Free Skate to Carmina Burana by Carl Orff--I was blown away by how striking and gorgeous Josephine looked in this red costume from Lisa McKinnon. The design featured a second-skin-fitting bodice and fluttery asymmetrical skirt with STUNNING branch-like crystal applique which seemed to crawl down her torso. Oh, and yes, the open back was great too!

Short Program to Letting Go by Saara Aalto--Another beautiful design from Lisa McKinnon was featured in a look for Josephine's Short Program. I loved the delicate draping, soft lilac color, and sheer sequined illusion panels; it looked couture-like and perfectly gorgeous for the softly lyrical music.

Starr Andrews Short Program to Dancing With The Devil by Demi Lovato--Wearing a Custom Lisa McKinnon design, Starr commands attention in this fire-red bodysuit with silver sequin details. The design fit her body like a second skin and the crystal applique elongated and highlighted her silhouette as well as making her look like a fiery and devilish STAR out on the ice.

Free Skate to Je Suis Malade--I loved this nude-and-blue colored costume that Starr wore for her Free Skate. Once again Lisa McKinnon strikes costume gold with this look. The design featured a plunging neckline, sheer sleeves, and STUNNING sequin crystal details throughout the torso. The nude and blue colors were fabulous, all adding to a very high-end-looking design. If you want to pay good money for a skating costume, it should look like this!

Ava Ziegler--I wanted to add Ava Ziegler and both her costumes for her Free Skate (L) and Short Program (R). Both costumes were pretty great but I especially loved the blush-and-silver sequined look worn for her Short Program to Rebirth by Hi-Finesse, Natacha Atlas. I thought this costume in particular gave me high fashion vibes and looked runway-ready with its blush-pink tone and that incredible "mirrored" jeweled sequin torso.

Elsa Cheng Free Skate to Queen's Gambit Soundtrack--Marking her senior debut at this year's Nationals, Elsa looked lovely in this costume...so much so that it made an impression on me as a spectator in the Arena and therefore, I wanted to briefly talk about it. The blue-shaded costume featured an ombre dye effect--from light at the bodice to darker at the waist and hips, a fluttery skirt, and really beautiful pearl-like crystals throughout. It was both pretty and high-end looking--a definite Senior Women's Costume for a new Senior Woman!

Audrey Shin Free Skate to The Offering, The Giving, and Heroes by Michael W. Smith--One of the prettiest costumes at the Senior Women's Finals at the 2023 U.S. Nationals was this coral and peach design worn by Audry Shin. The costume, designed and created by The Well Dressed Skater featured a sweetheart neckline, nude illusion top-and-arms panels, and delicately gathered bust/torso. The ombre shading was so pretty along with the gorgeous crystal work.

Michelle Lee Short Program to The Chronicles of Narnia--Michelle wore this costume--designed by The Well Dressed Skater--for her Short Program, and once again, as a spectator of the event, I made a mental note of how much I liked it! The light lemon yellow and lilac colored costume featured a design silhouette mimicking a corset bodice, a v-neck with gathered inset, short puffy sleeves, and pretty crystal work throughout. There were obvious hints of Period-like costumes about it but also seemed fashionable at the same time.

Gabriella Izzo Free Skate to Elena & Lila by Max Richter, Orlando: Memory is the Seamstress by Max Richter, and November by Mari Samuelsen, Max Richter, Cedric Tour--I liked Gabriella's costume above, which she wore for her Free Skate. The one-shoulder look was created by the French costume house of Astraee Couture. I think they did a wonderful job here, especially with the graphic and geometric-looking designs (and sequins) on the torso, which looked like abstract peacock feathers.

Lastly...
I wanted to end with this costume worn by Alexa Gasparotto--Alexa wore this for her Free Skate to Family (from Dreamgirls) by Jamie Foxx, Anika Noni Rose, Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, and Keith Robinson. The minute she stepped on the ice, I could not take my eyes off her. The costume, designed by Juju Designs, was very "Dreamgirls" splashy and sparkly (of course!) with its vibrant blue and ivory colors, beautiful crystals, and fringe skirt trim. The blue airbrushing was cool and so was how effective all that fringe was as she skated. Not sure if she needed that eye makeup along with the costume, but hey, maybe in this instance: "more is more" is the way to go!

ICE STYLE.....2021 World Figure Skating Championships - LADIES COSTUMES!

Ladies Style--(L to R) Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Alexandra Trusova, Karen Chen, and Anna Shcherbakova--2021 World Figure Skating Championships

Continuing with my ICE STYLE BLOG on this past week's 2021 World Figure Skating Championships...in my last post I discussed THE MEN'S COSTUMES HERE, so now it's time for the LADIES...
Let's begin with Japan's Rika Kihira:

Rika Kihira Japan Short Program--For her Short Program to The Fire Within by Jennifer Thomas, Rika wore this very striking costume which featured a very elaborately sequined deep blue-and-red dress over deep blue leggings. The "dress" had an eye-catching display of fire-like red and blue strips throughout the torso, all heavily beaded, over an ombre-dyed stretch chiffon base. The heavily appliqued bust detail had the effect of a heart "exploding". The rest of the dress featured nude illusion from neckline to shoulder, and to the back. It was a very detailed costume for sure. I'm not sure if the leggings were even necessary but, it did add a slightly modern touch to the look.
SCORE: 9.05

Satoko Miyahara Japan Short Program--For her Short Program to Gnossienne: No. 1 by Erik Satie, Metamorphosis Two by Philipp Glass, Satoko skated wearing this aqua-green costume. The design was a very classic ladies figure skating costume with its lace applique, tiny crystal beading, nude illusion, and double-layered skirt. Even though it didn't reach any new heights of style or fashion in the world of figure skating costumes, it was pretty and right for the music.
SCORE: 8.99

Kaori Sakamoto Japan Free Skate--For her Free Skate to Main Title Trinity Infinity from The Matrix (soundtrack) by Don Davis, Clubbed To Death from The Matrix (soundtrack) by Rob Dougan, Chateau Vol.2 from The Matrix (soundtrack) by Rob Dougan, Kaori wore this fabulous costume which I loved this past season. This is a perfect example of taking figure skating costume design to new (higher) levels. I loved the modern fabrication of latex-like-faux stretch leather, along with the asymmetrical details. But really, the "stars" were those stunning jeweled crystals that mimicked "The Matrix" code/digital rain. Kaori looked fresh, modern, high-fashion styled, and dare I say it: bad-a** !
SCORE: 9.90

Bradie Tennell USA Short Program--Bradie skated her Short Program to Moderation by Florence and the MachineI think it's fitting that for this skate to a Florence and the Machine song, Bradie would wear a more modern, sleek costume. I liked this second-skin black jumpsuit for the fact that it was quite a sexy departure from what we normally see her wear (she's more known as being in the "Ice Princess" category in terms of costumes). The costume had the appearance of a separate midriff-baring crop-top and super-skinny tight leggings and featured geometric details, semi-see-through panels, and delicate beading. If she were to really elevate the entire look, I would have liked to have seen a more modern hairstyle. A faux-hawk perhaps?!
SCORE: 9.00

Bradie Tennell USA Free Skate--For her Free Skate to Sarajevo by Max Richter, Dawn of Faith by Eternal Eclipse, Bradie wisely contrasted her modern sleek look from the Short Program to this more classic elegant costume. The ivory and black ombre-shaded costume featured an asymmetrical neckline, boning-like details reminiscent of vintage Dior corselettes, and beautiful silver crystals that went from heavy to light throughout the torso. This was quite an exquisite costume and very Ice Style Couture.
SCORE: 9.35

Karen Chen USA Free Skate--Karen skated her Free Skate to Butterfly Lover Concerto by Takako Nishizaki - Takako Nishizaki wearing this absolutely beautiful costume. The lilac-colored design featured a rich display of crystals, sequins, and butterfly motifs encircling the torso and bodice, creating a stunning visual accompaniment to her skate and music.
SCORE: 9.75

Hae-in Lee South Korea Free Skate--Lee skated her Free Skate to Nina's Dream (from "Black Swan" soundtrack) by Clint Mansell, Stumbled Beginnings (from "Black Swan" soundtrack) by Clint Mansell, A Swan Is Born (from "Black Swan" soundtrack) by Clint Mansell, Perfection (from "Black Swan" soundtrack) by Clint Mansell wearing this gorgeous costume. Even though the music was to "Black Swan", the costume was done in a deep hunter green shade which was unique. I also loved the feather-like crystal embellishment on the torso in green and silver which gave a nod to the swan. Last, but not least, the crystal beaded neckline was EXQUISITE!
SCORE: 9.75

Alexandra Trusova *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Short Program--For her Short Program to Love Story by Lola and Hauser, Appassionata by Secret Garden, Alexandra wore this white and lilac shaded costume. It was a pretty costume and I appreciated the side-back strappy details (very Versace-lite!) and the crystal embellishment throughout the front torso. Although I didn't mind the delicate white-and-lilac color, I feel Trusova looks better in stronger richer colors and I wish the skirt was shorter for her petite frame.
SCORE: 8.45

Alexandra Trusova *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Free Skate--For her Free Skate to O Verona (from "Romeo and Juliet" soundtrack) by Craig Armstrong, Montagues & Capulets (from "Romeo and Juliet" soundtrack), Come, Gentle Night (from "Romeo and Juliet" soundtrack) by Abel Korzeniowski, and Dance of the Knights (from "Romeo and Juliet") by Sergei Prokofiev Alexandra wore this black and fuchsia-colored costume. The design was "dark" and "mature" for the young lady but fit the imposing "Romeo and Juliet" Prokofiev music. I liked the "skeletal"-like details around her ribcage/torso and web-like back strap embellishment...

The Thorn Queen...but not at Worlds

...As her skate neared its second half, I was waiting for her to do the release of her sleeve thorns which was a highlight (for me) of her skate and costume...however...it never came. It seems that the Russian Federation might have gotten some "costume notes" from previous judges who possibly suggested to not have that (maybe too gimmicky??)...Oh well...because I liked it!

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Short Program--Elizaveta skated her Short Program to Lovely by Billie Eilish and Khaled. She wore this "fashion forward' look, consisting of a see-through stretch mesh leotard/bodysuit with a crop black top and a very mini skirt with silver belt/chain details. She accessorized the look with black gloves and a silver metallic wrist bracelet. She looked like a sexy back-up dancer for a 90's Paula Abdul. The costume was more in line with something one would see for a "Show"/Exhibition look but it works for Elizaveta because as we all know, she's ALWAYS ready for a show!
SCORE: 9.00

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Free Skate--For her Free Skate to Chronicles of a Mischievous Bird by Bkhima Iunusov, Elizaveta wore this black costume above. The design features wing-like fluttery sleeves, an asymmetrical "skirt" and corset-like details around the midriff. The costume mixes solid and see-through materials for a dark and sexy vibe. While I liked most of it, I am not a fan of the oddly colored "nude" illusion panel in the front neckline; it's just too dark for her skin tone.
SCORE: 8.75

Anna Shcherbakova *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Short Program--Skating to O doux printemps d'autrefois by Jules Massenet, performed by Joshua Bell for her Short Program, Anna wore this beautiful costume above. The blue design had a gathered bust with a keyhole front, semi-sheer sleeves, and crystal-encrusted Empire and waist seams. As a costume, it reflected a romantic, feminine aesthetic with its silhouette but I also liked how the blue-violet ombre shadings and crystals reminded me of a lovely star-filled night sky.
SCORE: 9.25

Anna Shcherbakova *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Free Skate--For her Free Skate to Morning Passages by Philipp Glass, Big Plans (from "The Home of Dark Butterflies" soundtrack) by Panu Aaltio, Beethoven's Five Secrets by The Piano Guys, Anna wore this costume...and honestly, it is one of my favorites of the season. The design is gorgeous, luxe, romantic, and goes well with the music. The costume features lovely ombre shading in ivory, silver to deep gunmetal grays in the torso and skirt as well as beautiful pink/skin-colored sleeves. The crystal beading swirls around her body like shiny stars encircling a midnight sky. All in all, if one added layers of chiffon that went to the floor, I could easily see this on an Awards Show red carpet--once we start having those again!
SCORE: 9.85

ICE STYLE.....Skate America 2019 Figure Skating Costumes Recap: LADIES!

Skate America 2019 Ladies--Kaori Sakamoto of Japan, Bradie Tennell of USA, Kaori Sakamoto of Japan and Eunsoo Lim of South Korea--Skate America 2019 Las Vegas

This past weekend was the 2019 Skate America--the first event in the 2019-2020 Grand Prix of Figure Skating competition series. It was held at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, and covered Men's, Ladies, Ice Dance, and Pairs. As part of my ICE STYLE BLOG, I cover the costumes of figure skating so...it is time to discuss some of the costumes seen at Skate America 2019...

Let's start with the LADIES:
Anna Shcherbakova Russia Short Program--15-year-old Anna showed up to this first of the 2019-2020 Grand Prix of Figure Skating competition series to make history...and she did...later for her Free Skate (TWO QUADS!!!). For now, let's discuss her Short program costume to The Girl with the Plums, Meeting Laura, and Laura's Murder (from “The Perfume” soundtrack). I liked this deep ombre dyed gray dress featuring sequined applique in the torso. It was "Romantic Dark" and a bit "Nightshade Fairy" in its design.

For her Free Skate, she did an on-the-spot Costume Change:
Free Skate to Six Gnossiennes: Gnossienne No.1 by Eric Satie, performed by Roland Pontinen
The Firebird by Igor Stravinski--Anna started the skate in the lilac costume on the left above and then, she did a tug at her neck and voila: NEW COSTUME! While I really was not a fan of the lilac halter neck look, in the beginning, she Costume-redeemed herself when the "Firebird" one took over...
The red feather-like sequined applique-over-nude-illusion-body-suit-with-red-skirt was eye-catching and impacting. I liked that it was a definite change from what she had worn in the first half. Was it kind of cheesy? Yes, but I liked it.

Bradie Tennell USA Short Program--Bradie skated her Short Program to Mechanisms and Chronos by Kirill Richter wearing this red costume. The design featured a sequined covered nude illusion "plunging neckline" front, long sleeves and short skirt, all accented with a diamante thin belt. It looked sleek and modern and devoid of any unnecessary costume fluff, making Bradie look sleeker than ever!

Free Skate to Cinema Paradiso (soundtrack) by Ennio Morricone--For her Free Skate to "Cinema Paradiso", Bradie wore this light lilac colored halter costume with ombre dyed skirt and crystal-covered neckline. The costume was pretty but there was nothing fashion-extraordinary about it, to be honest.

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva Russia Short Program to Drumming Song by Florence and the Machine--Elizaveta wore this sexy black costume for her Short Program to Florence and the Machine. It was modern, sleek and "punk"-like. I liked the asymmetrical slit-front skirt and spray of crystal details.

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva Free Skate--For her Free Skate to Caravan and Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen performed by The Hot Sardines, Elizaveta wore this vest-and-pant ensemble with a white shirt and untied red bow tie. I get the relaxed "Jazzy" look to it but she looked like a waitress-after-the-Wedding-Party-is-done. Even with that, I have to say, it is still very much on her "brand" of costume-funkiness.

Stanislava Konstantinova Russia Short Program--For her Short Program to February by Leonid Levashkevich, Stanislava wore this gorgeous silver/gray costume. I loved the mock-neck fitted top design with under bustier, and flowy skirt. The crystal work was exquisite; the entire costume was elegant, chic, and elevated.

Karen Chen USA Free Skate--Karen skated her Free Skate to Illumination by Secret Garden wearing this costume above. I thought she looked quite pretty in this lightly ombre-dyed lilac costume featuring heavy-to-light sequins highlighting the torso.

Yi Christy Leung Hong Kong Free Skate--Hong Kong's Yi Christy Leung wore this eye-catching ultramarine blue colored costume for her Free Skate to Reveil, Seisouso (from Cirque du Soleil) by Benoit Jutras. The design was perfect for the "Cirque Du Soleil" music, with the color and varying peek-a-boo insets. I also liked the different sequins used in the costume including crystals, bugle beads, etc. They added a nice dimension to the costume.

Eunsoo Lim Korea Short Program--Eunsoo Lim is a fashion diva when it comes to her costumes; it's almost as if you are dressing a sample size model. She looks delicate, stylish and just-so-right in almost anything one gives her. This season is no different. For her Short Program to Capriccio Espagnol by Nikolai Rimski-Korsakov, she wore this royal purple sequined costume and I LOVED IT! It was elegant, chic, very Toreador (the beads, sequins!), and she even accented it all with flower detail in her chignon. This was a perfect way of showing that you can do SPAIN and not be all red and black.

Image result for sabrina movie audrey hepburn costumes
Free Skate to Sabrina (soundtrack)--Very "Sabrina"...you've got the necklace, the sweetheart neckline, the sequined bodice...this nude-colored costume was elegant, very delicately pretty and right for the music.

Wakaba Higuchi Japan Short Program--For her Short Program to Bird Set Free by Sia, Wakaba wore this black and white costume which was so fashion-forward yet elegant that it was one of my favorites. I loved the delicate sequin work and light ombre dye effect. I also liked the one sleeve and half-hand detail, reminding one of a bird's beak.

Kaori Sakamoto Japan Short Program--For her Short Program to No Roots by Alice Merton, Kaori wore this red costume which was FABULOUS! I loved the sexiness of it, the varying sizes of crystals throughout and nude-illusion peekaboo panels, as well as Versace-like strap detail. Whether it was intentional or not, the red straps remind me of the Rising Sun Flag that is used at sporting events by supporters of  Japanese teams.

Image result for matrix movie costumes
Free Skate to Matrix (soundtrack) by Don Davis--Kaori wore this wonderful costume for her Free Skate to "Matrix". I also loved this costume; it was so modern, so fashion-directional...it fits perfectly and exemplified the music and theme. And personally, I have to bow down to whoever sewed (or glued) those colored sequins to the faux patent leather because A)It isn't easy and B) They did a wonderful job!

Congratulations to the TOP THREE LADIES! (L to R) Bradie Tennell of USA (Silver), Anna Shcherbakova of Russia (Gold) and Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia (Bronze)--2019 Skate America Las Vegas Nevada
