WHO WORE WHAT?.....Michelle Obama in Carolina Herrera Custom, France State Dinner

President Francois Hollande of France with U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama, as he arrives at the North Portico for a State Dinner at the White House in Washington, D.C.

Tonight was the State Dinner to honor French President Francois Hollande. The big news is the fact that he would come sans his partner of course--after the news of his "affair" (how French!). Well, that's old news, it's all about what the U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama wore. The first lady chose a dramatic Carolina Herrera ball gown with a voluminous skirt and lace applique top. Of note: the blue and black gown is the first dress with sleeves Obama has worn to a state dinner.

WHO WORE WHAT?.....White House Correspondents' Association Dinner Red Carpet Part 1

Fur Divas: Actress/Activist Sharon Stone in black gown with black fur cape and long black leather gloves. and U.S. Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour in gold fitted gown with white mink cape, White House Correspondents' Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton on April 27, 2013 in Washington, DC

Last night was the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton on April 27, 2013 in Washington, DC , or as insiders like to call it, the "nerd prom".  News Reporters/correspondents from all spectrum of media--from TV, to newspapers (what's that?) and bloggers--rubbed shoulders and ate and drank very close together (that room look too packed!) with Hollywood TV and film (and some reality star) A-listers.

I always wonder who pays for all this, who flies out all these Hollywood peeps, pays for the First Class flights and 5-star hotel suites and car services...Is it the White House? What part of the budget does that come under? The "Entertainment" budget? Oh it's just too much to think about so instead, I'd rather think about the FASHION, of course. Several "trends" emerged last night: such as Lots of Lace, Embellished Gowns and Floaty Chiffon, among others. Let's take a look:

WHO WORE WHAT?.....Michelle Obama in Jason Wu Gown, 2013 Inaugural Ball

First Lady in Red:

Sketch by Jason Wu of Michelle Obama's 2013 Presidential Inaugural Ball gown

The custom-made red Jason Wu gown featured a full gathered floor-length skirt (ideal for dancing) fitted cinched waist done with a dyed-to-match duchess satin belt, round "key-hole" halter neckline (perfect to accentuate the First Lady's fabulous shoulders) with gold embellished ring and a plunging back.

The First Lady's red gown is inspired by this dress below from the Jason Wu Pre-Fall 2013 Collection:

Of course, this is now the SECOND Jason Wu "Inaugural Ball" gown the First Lady Michelle Obama has worn--above is the one she wore to the Presidential Inaugural Ball in 2009.

Congrats and Kudos to Jason Wu and his Team!!!

WHO WORE WHAT?.....First Lady Michelle Obama in Thom Browne Coat and Dress

First Lady Style:

First Lady Michelle Obama in grey-blue Thom Browne coat

Michelle Obama looked flawless today during the 2013 Presidential Inauguration festivities. The newly-banged First Lady (when is the last time we saw a US First Lady with bangs!!??) donned a gray-blue silk jacquard A-Line shaped coat from US designer Thom Browne. The coat was based on a necktie fabric and custom-made for the First Lady. She also wore a fit-to-flare A-line Thom Browne dress underneath the coat (which she wore with a Reed Krakoff cropped cardigan) J.Crew Valentina pumps ($238), and a multistrand pearl necklace by Cathy Waterman ($17,300).

Thom Browne has made a name for himself with his shrunken suits, jackets, cropped "high-water" tailored skinny trousers--all of which has revolutionized the young menswear Contemporary market--and all his suits have been copied by the likes of H&M and TopMan. He designs for Brooks Brothers Black Fleece and in 2006 was honored by the Council of Fashion Designers of America with the Menswear Designer of the Year.

The First Lady has worn his designs before--during the foreign policy Presidential Debate and also at the DNC/Democratic National Convention above.

For the actual Swearing In in the US Capitol, she added a FABULOUS--and very on-trend--jeweled belt from JCrew, beautiful Aubergine Leather gloves and switched her pumps for some Reed Krakoff knee high boots. After today’s official events, Michelle Obama’s ensemble (and the accessories) will go to the National Archives.

First Daughters Sasha and Malia:

The First Daughters, Sasha and Malia were in colorful shades of purple from Kate Spade and JCrew, respectively.  I LOVED the bold colors, and very fitted stylish coats. I especially liked Sasha's statement making necklace--also very on-trend:

It is so endearing to see how much they have matured and grown up--from how they looked four years ago:

I also love that even then, they were big fans of color!!! Go Sasha and Malia!
