WHO WORE WHAT?.....Vanity Fair Oscar Party 2015: Trend Alert! See Through Dresses

Trend Alert: See Through Ladies

Besides Gigi Hadid and Irina Shayk, several other ladies wore see-through dresses to the 2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party and here we have...

Rita Ora in a black matte jersey and black see-through chiffon gown from Donna Karan Atelier. Donna Karan Atelier is the more "Custom/Couture" arm of the brand, only for stars and for the red carpet. In other words, don't bother finding any of these dresses at any Donna Karan store, online, or wherever.

Rita Ora in Donna Karan Atelier--2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party--As you can see from above, you've got to be BOLD, BRAVE and be cool with going underwear-less to pull off this style of a gown. I like the front but I admit that the back is TASTELESS and too Tacky-Hoochie (since when is seeing half your butt chic??!!)

Lily Collins in Zuhair Murad Spring 2015 Ready To Wear--2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party--Lily does See Through much better (and tasteful) than Rita did. Here, Collins wears a black sequined gown from Zuhair Murad (yes, him AGAIN!! I told you his atelier and press department were busy!) Spring 2015 Ready-to-Wear. I love the hint of tuxedo with the satin lapels. It's modern, a bit Victor/Victoria and still glam enough for a Vanity Fair Oscar Party.

Malin Akerman--2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party--Malin also did the See-Through trend wearing this black lace sequined gown with a plunging neckline and under-bodysuit.

Kelly Lynch--2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party--Kelly Lynch combined satin and see-through in the style she wore at the 2015 Vanity Fair Oscar Party seen above. The style is a bit of a mish-mash; there is a bubble mini skirt under an over dress in panel like shapes, there's pockets, then there's a spiderweb-like lace top...and a black bikini bra top under it all. Not sure about it all.

What do you guys think?
Who did See Through Trend better?

WHO WORE WHAT?.....71st Annual Golden Globe Awards: Trend Alert! Hi-Lo Gowns

Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta; Caitlin Fitzgerald in Emilia Wickstead; Sandra Bullock in Prabal Gurung; Michelle Dockery in Oscar de la Renta

2014 Golden Globe awards Red Carpet Trend Alert: Hi-Lo Gowns--
Hi-Lo gowns have been popular lately--both on the runway and the Red Carpet. Hi-Lo means higher in the front and low-to the floor, or beyond--in the back. Oscar de la Renta is a big proponent of this silhouette. It's a fabulous style especially since it can showcase the gorgeous shoes that sometimes get lost in a floor-length gown. And as a note: this is one of the ONLY ways shoes should be seen...

Drew Barrymore in Monique Lhuillier; Elizabeth Moss in J. Mendel; Aubrey Plaza in Oscar de la Renta

My favorite gown in this Hi-Lo group are Michelle Dockery's Oscar de la Renta strapless sequined dress and I also thought Elizabeth Moss' fitted and fishtail Hi-Lo was stunning.
Which Hi-Lo gown did you like?

WHO WORE WHAT?.....71st Annual Golden Globe Awards: Trend Alert! Red Dresses

Emma Watson in Dior Haute Couture; Amy Adams in Valentino Couture; Julia Louis-Drefus in Narciso Rodriguez

Kristen Connolly in Lorena Sarbu; Lupita Nyong'o in Ralph Lauren; Edie Falco in Lanvin

2014 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet Trend Alert: Red Dresses--
Red dresses were another big (color) trend at last night's 2014 Golden Globe Awards. Red dresses ON the red carpet have been quite the trend for the last few seasons so it's no surprise the color is going to continue to be big for the 2014 Awards Season. My Top Favorite gown here is the red off-the-shoulder caped column Ralph Lauren gown on Lupita Nyong'o. HANDS DOWN. The Best. And I would say the "1st Runner-up" would be Amy Adams in Valentino Couture.

Which Red Dress is your favorite?

WHO WORE WHAT?.....71st Annual Golden Globe Awards: Trend Alert! Black and White

Laura Carmichael in Viktor & Rolf; Allison Williams in Alexander McQueen; Hayden Panettiere in Tom Ford; Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture

2014 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet Trend Alert: Black and White--
Last night we saw lots of black and white gowns on the red carpet. Above are eight examples of those such gowns. They ranged from "Sporty" (Julia Roberts in Dolce & Gabbana) to All-out Glam (Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Roberto Cavalli).

Zosia Mamet in Reem Acra; Heidi Klum in Marchesa; Julia Roberts in Dolce & Gabbana; Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Roberto Cavalli

My two top faves of this black-and-white group are Allison Williams in feathered Alexander McQueen and Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Roberto Cavalli). The Fashion Fail here is Roberts. The strapless gown-over-a-white-dress shirt look is well, so 1998 Sharon Stone-at-the-Academy Awards-Been There/Done That and it also seems so blah and uncreative to be honest, especially when put along the other Glam Girls.

What do you guys think? Which one was your FAVE Black-and-White gal? And Not-So-Fave?

WHO WORE WHAT?.....70th Annual Golden Globes: Trend Alert Peplum Dresses

Perfect Peplum

Anne Hathaway in Chanel Haute Couture: Another big trend at the 70th Golden Globe Awards was the Peplum Dress. This has been a trend that we have been seeing on the runways for the last few seasons, so it was no surprise to see it on the Red Carpet tonight.

Anne Hathaway wore a beautiful white brocade Chanel Haute Couture Gown with what I like to call a "petite peplum". The "cut" of the dress is exquisite and a shape that the House of Chanel has mastered.

Rosario Dawson in Antonio Berardi: While I love the seafoam blue color on Rosario, the dress fit her a bit odd. I love the layered and intricately seamed peplum, but the bust section was just a bit off. I would have loved to have seen this dress with a deeper cowl to open up the neckline.

Sarah Hyland in Max Azria Atelier: Sarah wears a beautifully fitting (it better be if it is custom!) Max Azria Gown in silk Crepe and Satin with a draped and fan pleated peplum. She looks very striking and grown-up, which is probably something she is "going for" after playing a teen on a hit show for several years.  I love the dress...my one complaint would be that I wish it were another color besides black.

What do you think?!

WHO WORE WHAT?.....70th Annual Golden Globes: Trend Alert Red

Ladies in Red

Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior Haute Couture

Another big trend of the night was the color RED! It is always a popular color but some people worry about wearing Red on the Red Carpet. It is usually about getting the right tone of red that suits you and not being too matchy matchy on the carpet.

Marion's dress is sure to be a controversial choice, but I love it! She is an actress that can push the "Fashion Boundaries" and we need those ladies on the Red Carpet! They can't ALL be perfect mermaid shaped gowns! I love the asymmetrical hem and the overdrape that emphasizes the belted waist.

Jennifer Garner in Vivienne Westwood: This is quite a conservative style for Vivienne Westwood and I think it looks fantastic on Jennifer. I especially love the rich, deep red color and the nipped in waist.

Claire Danes in Custom Versace: I had predicted that Claire Danes would wear a softer, pastel color; well, she proved me wrong and showed up in this sexy custom Versace in Fire Engine Red colored gown! Claire has beautiful broad shoulders and the Versace Team did a great job in highlighting that great asset.  She looks FAB in this dress...especially after giving birth only 1 month ago! Crazy!

Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta: Zooey looked beautiful in this red Taffeta strapless ballgown (another big trend of the night!). She looked very "Zooey" which is just the way she likes it. Love the oversized pearls which is a perfect "Zooey" touch.

Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior Haute Couture: I've already discussed Jennifer HERE. But, once again, I think she looks great. The breast detailing seems to be quite a controversial topic on twitter but I love it. It is very classic 1950's Dior...with a RED twist!!

WHO WORE WHAT?.....70th Annual Golden Globes: Trend Alert Lace

Lovely in Lace

 Amy Adams in Custom Marchesa

One of the biggest trends tonight at the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards was Lace; and it came in ALL varieties. Delicate in White and Ballet Pink, Beaded, Metallic and Guipure...to name just a few. Some were more successful than others. Below are some of the highlights....and lowlights!

Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy: Apparently she said she gets to keep the dress which, lucky for her, she looks amazing in.

Nicole Ritchie in Naeem Khan: Beautiful Color and bead work. Always a Naeem Khan trademark. I like how she is very covered up but still quite sexy.

Michelle Dockery in Alexandre Vaulthier: I love the high neck and strong shoulders and am hoping when she turns around this has an open back!

Megan Fox in Roberto Cavalli: She looks soft and delicate. A nice choice for an actress known for her sex appeal. She is a new Mommy and it is the perfect way to show she has lost the baby weight but not in an over-the-top sorta way.

Julia Louis-Dreyfuss in Vera Wang: While being interviewed, this dress looked stunning and in some of the close-up shots you could see how beautiful the lace and layers of tulle were. Here in the photos, it doesn't come off as special and almost feels heavy.

Tina Fey in L'Wren Scott: Tina Fey LOVES black and white so I can see why she would have been drawn to this dress. Unfortunately the whole thing is a bit of a miss for me. The Lace looks too heavy and the length is just odd. Luckily, she changed and wore a great dress to open the show!

RUNWAY REPORT.....Runway Fashion Trend Alert: Limoncello Yellow

Limoncello Anyone? Sun Goddess: Canary yellow gown, Alexander McQueen Resort 2010 Guess what kids: It's all about yellow! All shades of it. Mustard Yellow, Grey Poupon Yellow, Canary, even Neon "Body Glove" Yellow. For Resort 2010, everyone who is anyone--in the NY Fashion Industry (hey, where are my peeps from LA????) showed yellow in varying degrees. And I am all for it. I have even tried to infiltrate it into my teaching. Desperate Housewife Yellow: Isaac Mizrahi Resort 2010 bright yellow A-line one-shoulder cocktail dress As one of the Instructors at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising/FIDM, I teach a class to the upcoming "Debut 2010" Advanced Fashion Design students---the designers of tomorrow. Just last week, we all went on a "Field Trip" to Mood Fabrics here in Los Angeles and I suggested mustard and varying degrees of yellow as the "pop" color that was needed for their upcoming collections. So you see: I read, I see the trends and I "bring it back" to my students. And also to my faithful Nick Verreos Blog fashionistas of course!Mustard Mini: Marc Jacobs Resort 2010 Grey Poupon Cocktail: Lanvin mustard yellow cocktail dress, Resort 2010 I just got back from Europe and went to France and Italy. I finished my trip in GORGEOUS Positano, in the Amalfi Coast. And there, it was all about YELLOW too. The Limoncello kind. I bought candles, perfumes and of course, several bottles of luscious liqueur! So I dare to call this yellow trend, a Limoncello Trend! Twisted Yellow: Derek Lam Resort 2010 cocktail dress Just know, that it is no longer about "Mellow Yellow"---it's all about Bright "Notice Me" I-am-competing-with-the-Sun Yellow! I say Bring it! If you want to be "on top" of this trend: I would suggest to girls out there to look for a top, blouse, or even a cool pair of yellow jeans (I'm sure H & M, Forever 21 or Hot Topic has a pair), maybe a little cocktail dress--in this color. Go for it. It's the new LBD. Or the LYD!!!

RUNWAY REPORT.....Resort 2010 Trend Alert: Bright Colors

Edie Beale 2010: Terracotta Orange Trench Coat by Yves Saint Laurent Resort 2010
It's All About Color Ladies! Yep, Resort 2010 is looking more like a trip to the Bollywood movie set, as opposed to a trip to the Hampton's . Naturally, Spring and Summer are the seasons when designers add color to their collections (as opposed to Fall/Winter black and browns) . But even so, it is unusually BRIGHT.
Duran Duran Back-up Dancer: Cobalt Blue cowl-draped Mini Dress, from Derek Lam Resort 2010
Strong 80's colors, hearken back to the colorful dresses of Stephen Sprouse and the genius of Patrick Kelly. Pastel tones: OUT. Neon brights: VERY IN! Think Cobalt Blue, Bubblegum Pink, Neon Green. Looks like you'll also be needing a FIERCE pair of sunglasses to block out the glare from the women wearing these bright bold colors.
Garden Party: Blues and greens, according to Alber Elbaz for Lanvin Resort 2010
Bubblegum: "Barbie Pink" as shown at Donna Karan Resort 2010
Some say this renewed use of bold colors might be a direct result of the dire economic woes the world is in. Clothing designers are making things look "Happy Happy Happy", showing bright colorful coats, dresses, sportswear and trying to inject a bit of fun into people's depressed lives (Although I doubt someone who can spend $3,000 on a bright Zac Posen Apple Green mini-dress is having an "economic depression").
Robert Palmer Girl: Apple green satin mini dress with black peek-a-boo bust, Zac Posen Resort 2010
VH1 The 80s Are Back: Electric Blue and shocking printed leggings, Alexander McQueen Resort 2010
In all fairness, when looking at the collections as a whole, there is plenty of Black and the Neutrals are well represented. But BRIGHT COLORS are the real story for Resort--and the coming Spring 2010. Will you be wearing a pair of neon kaleidoscope leggings from Alexander McQueen next January?

RUNWAY REPORT.....Resort 2010 Trend Alert: High Waisted, Cropped Pant

RUNWAY REPORT.....Resort 2010 Trend Alert: High Waisted, Cropped Pant

You Slouch! The Latest Pant: Paperbag Cropped Trousers, Marc Jacobs Resort 2010 Slouchy, loose-yet-fitted, pleated and pegged...these are all the buzz words for Resort 2010. And since the Resort Collections are just an overture to what you will see for Spring/Summer, then this is just the beginning of a major trend alert! These Pants look AMAZING...on a 6'2" size 2 model: Proenza Schouler Resort 2010 Designers, from Marc Jacobs to Proenza Schouler to Lanvin's Alber Elbaz, are still in a major 1980's "moment" and these pants are indicative of this. Since I am a child of the 80's, I unfortunately remember these. I would venture to guess that most of the Design Assistants at these firms, weren't even born in the 1980s (God I feel old!) and think these are just so "new and fresh". When I see these, all I can think of is Dexy's Midnight Runners and their 1982 "Come On Eileen" video. Matthew Williamson Resort 2010 As I began looking at all the Resort Collection photos, I noticed these pant styles kept popping up. What first came to mind was can a "real girl" wear these? The silhouette alone seems to be unflattering to just about EVERY OTHER GIRL---except the 5'11", 112 lb, size 2 model wearing them! They emphasize your hips and cut off your legs at a rather unflattering line. But to heck with that. Fashion doesn't have to be for everybody.Cropped Graduate: A design from FIDM Debut '09 graduate, Adrian Manuel These pants are fabulous and chic-- if you are a size 0-4 fashionista girl, a junior Vogue editor fresh out of NYU or a young, tall and thin Hollywood starlet or singer. And I must admit, I thought they were cute enough for one of my FIDM Advanced Fashion Design students to show them for their Debut 2009 Collection earlier this year. Phillip Lim 3.1 Resort 2010 I'll be really curious to see how much this trend takes effect and how soon Forever 21 knocks it off! I'm sure you could already find a pair at H & M. The one thing this trend might be really good for is the Shoe Industry. Whereas the trend before was to cover the shoe with floor-grazing jeans and trousers, now we are exposing them with these new cropped and pegged high-waisted baggy pants. And just when you think that it's only the females who are being burdened with this trend: Think again. The latest Paris and Milan Menswear Collections also showed cropped , pegged and (I am about to scream!) PLEATED pants!!!!
