Beyonce in Custom Proenza Schouler--2015 Grammy Awards Red Carpet
Beyonce walked the 2015 Grammy Awards red carpet wearing a black sequined applique gown designed by NY-based design team Proenza Schouler. It was custom. When I first learned that it was from Proenza Schouler, I laughed. I have to explain: their brand is not necessarily known for gowns but I guess if Beyonce and her style/glam team call, it's time to make a gown! It's a beautiful gown but I have to ask, what does this have to do with the Proenza Schouler brand and design aesthetic? Not much. But it seems that there is a trend for designers and brands to dress stars on the red carpet with designs that may not necessarily reflect who they are--See Jennifer Aniston in Saint Laurent and Anne Hathaway in Prada at the 2014 Academy Awards as examples of styles that have little or no semblance to the actual brand.
