WHO WORE WHAT?.....2017 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet: My Top Ten Favorite Gowns!

Golden Globe Awards 2017: My Top Gowns of the Red Carpet

Blake Lively in Atelier Versace: Blake Lively was looking like an Erte illustration come to life in this black silk velvet gown from Atelier Versace, the Haute Couture arm of the famed Italian fashion house. The gown featured a fit-to-flare silhouette, a long dramatic train, Swarovski crystal chain-mail neckline, top and pocket embellishment and a front bust cut-out for a (slightly) plunging neckline view. This gown is fitted to a 1/4 inch of her body! Perfection. And in case you have never looked inside an Atelier Versace gown...you can trust that there is a whole boned under-structure sewn into the dress that is holding it all up!

Actress Lily Collins wore this beautiful ballgown from Zuhair Murad Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2016 collection. The lilac/raspberry colored gown is all handmade (it's Haute Couture!) and features hand-sewn metallic lace applique throughout with a nude silk tulle base/top.  I think she looks beautiful and as if she is making her "Debut" at a Parisian Ball for royals!

Natalie Portman in Custom Prada: Natalie Portman looks absolutely STUNNING in this chartreuse colored Custom Prada gown. Portman is nominated for her role of the former First Lady Jackie Kennedy in the film "Jackie" and I love the "vintage" look of this gown--it's very 1960's Alta Moda Couture in its shape, 3/4 sleeves and minimalist embellished detail. She looks like the wife of an Ambassador...in 1965. But still so very now! And can we PLEASE stop saying that this color just doesn't work on ANYONE!!! Please!

Hailee Steinfeld in Custom Vera Wang: Actress Hailee Steinfeld wore this lilac colored ballgown from designer Vera Wang. The iridescent silk tulle gown was custom-made and featured a full "Princess" skirt, cold shoulder sleeves, gathered details, a center front slit opening...and a back cape/train. Normally, all of those components would probably come out a big ol' Pageant Beauty Queen mess but...here this gown looks ethereal and I do LOVE this pose above! #GoOnGirl

Jessica Chastain in Custom Prada: I thought Jessica Chastain looked absolutely gorgeous in this column gown custom-made for her by the Italian fashion house of Prada. The two stars here were the color--and OMG what a bold, beautiful color!---and the stunning sequined embroidery. The latter was delicately placed to one side and I loved the different color variations. Just gorgeous.

Jessica Biel in Elie Saab: I am a big fan of Elie saab and especially his out-of-this-world Haute Couture creations and his dreamy ballgowns. This dress modernized the full gown aesthetic with a bold print, super high side-front slit, sexy plunging neckline and unusual flower applique.

Mandy Moore in Naeem Khan: Mandy Moore wore this midnight blue--almost black silk chiffon gown from Naeem Khan. the gown featured an attached cape, flowing A-line flared gown and plunging neckline (a trend!). I think she looked modern and regal and I LOVED the dramatic cape and subtle thin belted waist.

Brie Larson in Rodarte: Actress Brie Larson wore this fire-red colored gown from Rodarte. The strapless gown featured sequined and gathered chiffon bustier details and a full gathered skirt. The gown is very pretty and rather "Beauty Pageant"-esque, but in a good way! It fits her well and makes her waist look soooo SUPER TINY!

Anna Kendrick in Vionnet Spring 2017: Anna Kendrick wore this gown from the French fashion house of Vionnet and it was designed by Goga Ashkenazi. The Grecian Goddess-style gown features a one-shoulder neckline, hand-pleated silk chiffon cupped busts and full silhouette.  I loved this gown for many reasons...it was red carpet fab, took up a lot of space (in a good way) and it was also vibing a 1930's/1940's look of "Old Hollywood Glamour". The lilac/gray color was sublime and I also loved her clean and sleek hair and makeup.

And Finally.....
Debbie Matenopoulos in NIKOLAKI: The ever-so-fabulous Debbie Matenopoulos, co-host of "The Insider" Entertainment TV Show and Hallmark's "Home & Family" wore one of our NIKOLAKI gowns at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet.  The gown is a color-blocked column style gown in black/golden creme/raspberry colored silk/wool zibeline fabric and features pleated sides, a plunging neckline, as well as side pockets.  I think I am a little bit biased since I co-designed this gown with my NIKOLAKI partner David Paul but...I think she looked GORGEOUS! Modern, chic, and can we discuss THAT TEENY TINY WAIST!!!

WHO WORE WHAT?.....2017 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet: The Uh-Ohs!

WHO WORE WHAT?.....2017 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet: The Uh-Ohs!

2017 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet: The Uh-Ohs!

Anna Chlumsky in Roland Mouret: When I first saw Anna Chlumsky and this gown on the red carpet, I was intrigued; I thought "OK, this is interesting..." This isn't a bad dress, in fact it is quite beautiful. Unfortunately, it is a classic example of "Right dress...but On The Wrong Person". Anna needed a dress with a bit more "support"; her upper half seemed to be lost on its (their) own.

Sophie Turner in Louis Vuitton: This slightly avant-garde/directional design just doesn't work at an awards show such as the Golden Globes. This look would be fine for say, the CFDA's or the premiere of the new season of "Game of Thrones", but not for the GG's. It's just too "kooky", especially for a non-fashion-savvy red carpet watcher.

Claire Foy in Erdem: Claire seems to have spent a bit too much time filming "The Crown" since it seems that she is wearing a dress a member of the Royal Family might have worn back in the early 1900's. It's very Costume "referential", especially with the billowy sleeves and almost-Empire satin waist detail. On a good note, I do love the lilac color and at the very least, she was on trend with the Games of Thrones-meets-Medieval-meets-Renaissance-like Trend some of the actresses were donning in terms of their gowns.

Felicity Jones in Gucci: Gucci is the hottest brand in fashion right now--and especially it's newest Creative Director Alessandro Michele, who has brought "Grandma Chic" into vogue. So MANY actresses are being lured by the buzz of the line, but unfortunately this dowdy nightgown of a dress does NOTHING for the lovely Felicity Jones. While "Grandma Chic" is VERY HOT on the runways, this look and trend doesn't always translate to the Red Carpet.

Janelle Monae in Armani Prive: This COUTURE, Custom-made gown by the Atelier arm of Armani, Armani Prive, is said to be a collaboration between Janelle and the esteemed house. This is a perfect example of Too Many Cook's in the Fashion Kitchen. High-lo hem, polka dots, tulle overlay, sequins and a waist bow...Yikes! Someone needed to say "Slow down sister...that is WAY TOO MANY IDEAS FOR ONE DRESS!" Janelle is two oversized paillettes away from a Quinciniera.

Kerry Washington in Dolce & Gabanna Alta Moda: Once again this is not a bad dress and VERY Dolce & Gabanna. But it just doesn't seem right for the occasion. The golden lace gown is from the Couture branch of the brand, so if one were to purchase the dress it would probably set you back $50,000 (trust me kids, Miss Kerry did  not pay for it). But just because it has a high price tag, doesn't mean it had the WOW factor to walk the Golden Globes Red Carpet. This would be lovely at a fancy party in Capri, but Golden Globes,...maybe not-so-mucheey.

Winona Ryder in Viktor & Rolf: Once again, this is a pretty dress and it's not a major "Oh No She Didn't" red carpet moment. In addition, I'm sure if you were to look at it close up, it is impeccably made since Viktor & Rolf only do Couture or Custom-made gowns. But...the bodice does NOT fit her well (slightly slouchy and ripply). Also, since Miss Winona is quite busty, this strapless style is not the best choice. This, in combination with the dark, heavy fabrication, just seems to be weighing her down. I get the look she was going for--it's very late 1940's Dior-esque "Old Hollywood Glamour" but it just slightly failed.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Vera Wang: Oh Sarah....This seems to be another collaborative process gone awry. Ms. Parker LOVES a good ballgown, but this style isn't always the best choice for her teeny tiny proportions. The high-waist and full skirt are completely overwhelming on her body. They tried to balance it out by creating a plunging neckline, but it was too much and that white silk-satin fabrications is one of THE MOST DIFFICULT fabrics anyone can work with!  And then we have the sleeves....I know they were going for a "Game of Thrones" moment (which is all the rage in fashion right now, as I stated previously), but with the fullness and the intentional extra long length, the entire look just swallowed poor Sarah up! Another case of : TOO MUCHEEY.

Diva Naomi: Only the one-and-only Naomi Campbell would show up to the Golden Globes SERVING YOU Diva Supermodel Style since after all, she IS a SUPERMODEL! Campbell wore this lilac and black colored silk duchesse satin gown from Atelier Versace Fall/Winter 2016 Couture collection. WHO WORE WHAT?.....2017 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet: Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen

Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen Spring 2017

Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen Spring 2017: It seems as if the 2017 Golden Globes Red Carpet was having a bit of a "Game of Thrones"/Renaissance/Medieval Fashion Moment. There were several cold shoulder sleeves, lots of metallics, and silhouettes that would be perfect for the Daenerys Targaryen's, Cersei Lannister's and a little bit of Catherine de Medici for good measure. And Nicole Kidman was right in there in the fashion moment with this silver and white gown from Alexander McQueen's Spring/Summer 2017 collection by designer Sarah Burton...

My Thoughts: The gown was VERY intricate and featured puffy open-shoulder sleeves, white/nude chiffon, beautiful silver paillette embroidery and a torn-like chiffon hem. It also has caged boning that can be seen through the gown. It was a work of fashion art. I am sure many of you might think this is a mess on Nicole but...I actually like it! I applaud Nicole for always being a little bit on the cutting edge of red carpet fashion (remember her chartreuse colored John Galliano Chinoiserie gown at the 1997 Oscars?) and for once again, "going there" in this dress. Sooooo...what did YOU guys think?

Evan Rachel Wood in Custom Altuzarra: Actress Evan Rachel Wood was giving Marlene Dietrich in her tuxedo ensemble from NY-based designer Joseph Altuzarra. The "Le Smoking" ensemble was VERY Yves Saint Laurent/Helmut Newton photo-inspired as well, if you ask me. In case you may not know these references...let me school you:

Tuxego gal: I love this look on Evan Rachel Wood. She looks sexy and powerful. The length of the jacket is so 70's and I loved the sharp shoulder and super-skinny sleeves; very vintage Saint Laurent for sure!

Tied Red Carpet: The pussy-bow blouse is delicately sweet and still effortlessly chic--Evan Rachel wood in Altuzarra, 2017 Golden Globes Red Carpet

WHO WORE WHAT?.....2017 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet: Sofia Vergara in Zuhair Murad

Sofia Vergara in Zuhair Murad Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2016

Actress and Colombian Bombshell Sofia Vergara wore this golden gown from Zuhair Murad Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2016 collection. The gown features gold and silver metallic hand-sewn sequined applique over nude tulle. The style also has open "cold" shoulders and open front, revealing a little cleavage (of course!). Speaking of cleavage...

The "Hermanas" are covered: Notice the small pads placed on Sofia's precious "sisters" as a precaution that there would not be a "Oopsie"/Too much showing moment.

Sofia La Bella: I thought Sofia looked quite stunning in this gown. She gave a little bit of a Gladiator Couture Goddess look with this. The dress fit her perfectly--it has to, it's Haute Couture and probably worth around $100,000!

Gathered Princess: If I had to remove something from this gown, it might be the sleeves since I'm not sure how necessary to the overall style they were but...I did like the draped off-the-shoulder aspect. What do YOU guys think of this gown on Hailee? Is it Pretty or Too Mucheey??
