PROJECT RUNWAY.....My TOP 5 OMG MOMENTS: Ep. 12

Welcome to Austin Texas! Nick Verreos welcomes Season 15 "Project Runway" Top Five designers on Episode 12 "Best Western Unconventional Materials Challenge

This week on Lifetime's "Project Runway", the designers flew to Austin Texas for their last Challenge before NY Fashion Week. As it turns out, it was yet another Unconventional Materials Challenge using materials found from Georgetown Farm Supply and Stubbs BBQ. I was honored to have been on hand to help Tim Gunn introduce the Challenge at the Best Western Plus Austin City Hotel. There is lots to discuss so let's just get to my "Top 5 OMG Moments" of this Episode as well as my MyLifetime.com RECAP at the end of this blog!

First, click below to watch my "Top 5 OMG Moments Project Runway: Episode 12" on YouTube:

#1 OMG! The Designers Are Off To TEXAS Y’all! In the beginning of the episode, Tim and Heidi decide that the designers need a change of scenery and send them on their second trip of the season! This time, to the city that “Keeps it Weird”: AUSTIN TEXAS!!  WHAT…In TARNATION…would make “Project Runway” send these designers to the Lone Star State?? Well…that leads me to…

#2 OMG! I’M BAAAACK!!!! I’m always honored to join my “Project Runway” family and be part of any new season! As a Fashion Designer, my search for inspiration takes me around the world, and I’ve been thrilled to partner with BEST WESTERN on many of my journeys, and now, honored to join up with Tim Gunn to help introduce this week’s Challenge.

It's Getting Hot 'N Here: Nick Verreos and Tim Gunn, Best Western Plus Austin City Hotel, Austin Texas

Now, while y’all saw Tim and I stand by the pool looking all dapper and easy/breezy, little did you know that it was about 110 Degrees, VERY HUMID and both Tim and I were SCHVITZING like Hookers in Church (Well, mostly I was!). Lord knows that all I could think about was diving into that pool, BUT we had more important matters at hand, which was announcing this Unconventional Materials Challenge!

#3 OMG! No Brisket or BBQ Sauce Dresses for These Designers! In the spirit of Austin and “Keeping It Weird”, the designers were able to steer themselves away from clichés such as Gingham table cloths, Cowboy hats and BBQ sauce, and instead get inspired by Meal Worms, Guitar Picks, Vinyl Records and Dog Treats of all things! Looks like they’re on the right track to following the city’s motto. Now…if they can just step outside their silhouette comfort zone!!!

#4 OMG! Consistent Or…Uncreative?? While consistency is key to any successful designer’s aesthetic, and creating a cohesive identity to your brand is essential…It’s important on a show like “Project Runway” to show the judges a variety of design ideas and give them little “nuggets” of surprise…Keep them INTERESTED! Unfortunately, all five designers seemed to have fallen into a bit of a design rut:
This week, Cornelius did another sheath dress...

Roberi never met a One Shoulder Asymmetrical Dress he didn’t like...

Rik can’t step away from all the black and A-line...

And Erin loves a good flower applique as much as...

Laurence loves a defined shoulder. OK kids, we get what you’re all about, now give us something a little more…unexpected!

#5 OMG! We Have Our Final Four! First off, I will say that to a large extent, the designers did redeem themselves from last week’s supposedly Avant-garde Challenge. First off, Rik’s vinyl record and guitar strap dress was edgy and impeccably made; it was very Robert Palmer Girl. Laurence’s Gladiator Queen was powerful, sexy and mysterious, all at the same time. Erin’s guitar pick, meal worms and sunshade dress was an Applique Tour De Force!

And last but not least, Roberi’s “Anxiety Knot Dress”  (above) was unique, thoughtful and almost, a work of wearable art! Congrats to the Final Four! Can’t wait to see what you guys will be creating for Fashion Week and how Tim reacts to your collections at those infamous Home Visits!! Until next time….

Now, here's my MyLifetime.com RECAP:

Season 15, Episode 12 Recap: It’s High Fashion, Y’all!

Season 15 is heading into the final stretch and we are down to the top 5 designers for this season of “Project Runway.” Even though last week’s episode featured an avant-garde/unconventional challenge, for some reason, this week’s was unconventional as well. Am I the only one getting the feeling that Tim, Heidi and the producers don’t think these designers have pushed themselves to their design limit? With this episode, they were given the impetus to go farther than ever. Let’s see if they did…

The episode begins with Tim and Heidi walking onto the runway stage with Heidi reminding the designers that this is the “big final challenge”–the last one before NY Fashion Week. Tim then tells them that “a change of scenery” is due. Miss Klum, in her best German-accented Southern twang, announces that the designers will be going to Austin, TX! She reminds them that the city’s unofficial motto is, “Keep Austin Weird,” and that they will be taking the town’s eccentricities and diversities and bringing their experiences right back to NYC. With that, Tim and Heidi sashay away.

The designers arrive in Austin, TX and check into their Best Western hotel. A note from Tim awaits them saying to “drop your bags, freshen up and meet up by the pool.” Along with Tim Gunn, someone very special is there to announce the challenge: me!

PROJECT RUNWAY.....My TOP 5 OMG MOMENTS: Ep. 11

Nick Verreos breaks it down on "Top 5 OMG Moments of Project Runway" Episode 11, YouTube

This last week's episode of Lifetime's Season 15 "Project Runway", the remaining six designers got to design a garment that was supposed to be Avant-garde using Unconventional Materials (metals and machinery) , as well as Conventional ones (textiles and notions from Mood). For my latest "Top 5 OMG Moments" video of "Project Runway", I explain how everyone--from Heidi, Tim to the Lexus guy-- told the designers to "GO BOLD!" Unfortunately, it still wasn't enough and they somehow missed the "Avant-garde" directive...

Click below to watch my Top 5 OMG Moments of "Project Runway" Episode 11 on YouTube:

So...here we go:
#1....OMG! Go BOLD or Go HOME! OK...So even before Tim announced this week's Challenge, Heidi greeted the designers and told them that they needed to be BOLD and that their designs should STAND OUT. Then, the Lexus guy says that his company's automobiles are BOLD, right before Tim tells the designers to GO BOLD for this Challenge. If that wasn't BOLD enough, Tim announces that it will not only be Avant-garde but also, an Unconventional Materials Challenge...

HELLOOOO DESIGNERS!!! RED FLAG!!! You better be ready to GO BOLD!!!

#2....OMG! Uh Oh. This is BOLD??? When we see the designs in the workroom as Tim gives his Critiques, Rik is doing a Cocktail Dress. We then switch to Laurence, who's doing a....Cocktail Dress! Then, it's time for Roberi and guess what he's creating? A Cocktail Dress.

Not to be outdone, Cornelius and Mah-jing join the bunch with....You guessed it! Cocktail Dresses!!! Sooooo....This is an Avant-garde Challenge....Right??

#3....OMG! I Have a Bone to Pick. It really took all of my self control not to hurl my bowl of popcorn at the TV screen when the judges started their critiques. Heidi somehow thought it was a positive that several of these so-called Avant-garde designs could be worn on the Red Carpet. I'm starting to wonder if Heidi's life is one big long Red Carpet, because she can't imagine any garment functioning in society, unless it's walking down one! Let me ESSSPLAIN to you and Miss Klum the following: Avant-garde is NOT meant for the Red Carpet--unless your Bjork or Lady Gaga (and even Miss Gaga has stopped that!). This is NOT the function of these garments. Avant-garde is meant to disrupt, provoke and illicit conversation, it is meant to inspire and dream. It's the closest FASHION has to "Modern Art". While it seems that some of the designers had questions regarding what Avant-garde was (Mah-jing especially), it seems that the judges had little clue as well.

#4....OMG! The Winner is...ERIN? Honestly, if I was a judge, I don't even know who I would have picked. And certainly not because there was a plethora of fab designs to chose from. But....I'm assuming Erin secured the WIN by being the BOLDEST?? And most Avant-garde?? I will say that, at least I give her points for using color. I guess that counts for something?? Sooooo....Congrats to Erin for getting the Win and being back on top!

#5....OMG! What Happened??? While I understand that the competition is stressful and the pressure of the Finale looms ever closer, it's imperative to realize that the Avant-garde Challenge is THE moment to express yourself and really WOW the judges with not only your ability to step outside the design box, but also a chance to marvel them with your technical prowess. In other words I wanted to see a COAT that SPANS THE LENGTH OF THE RUNWAY! Made out of CHICKEN WIRE! And...make it COUTUUUUURE! I'm starting to  worry that these designers don't have the ability to Wow the judges , or for that matter, us. Let's hope they can prove me wrong and end the season with a BANG!

And now, here's my FULL RECAP on MyLifetime.com for Episode 11: "Didn't You Hear? I Said Bold!"

Now that we have moved on from overindulging on turkey, pie and cyber shopping, it’s time to get back to more important matters: “Project Runway”! This week’s episode tried to merge the avant-garde with the unconventional as well as conventional. With all that, it had the prospect of design gold! Instead, we got aluminum, copper and a wire mesh mess. Time to recap!

Heidi greets the designers by telling them that there are only two challenges left (mon Dieu!). She then cryptically says that they better “buckle up because it’s going to be a thrill of a ride.” Before sending them off to meet Tim, she warns, “You better be BOLD and make sure your designs really STAND OUT. Go BIG or you’ll be going home.”

Up Up and Away!--Season 15 Project Runway Episode 10

Nick Verreos "Top 5 OMG Moments of Episode 10 Project Runway" on YouTube

This past week's episode of Lifetime Network's "Project Runway" involved designing an "Editorial" outfit for a "Power Woman". It was also the Marie Claire Challenge. The designers took a helicopter ride to get a fly-over view of Manhattan for their inspiration. The results were mixed. Time for my Top 5 OMG Moments of Episode 10 "Project Runway" as well as my RECAP on MyLifetime.com.  Continue reading...

Bird Sanctuary Couture??--Season 15 Project Runway Episode 10

#1....OMG! Up, Up & AWAAAAAYYY!! This week's episode began with a "note from Heidi" (that was placed there by a Production Assistant) telling the designers that for the next challenge "they need to have their heads out of the clouds...and you can't wing it and win it!". This left them scratching their heads and making wild guesses, wondering if they were A) going hot air ballooning or B) designing at a bird's sanctuary. As it turns out, they were taking a helicopter ride to be inspired by Manhattan. If you ask me....based on their runway designs...it was a waste of money...it turns out the designers were more inspired by golf courses, and Africa?? (Hmmm!). Maybe they should have taken a taxi ride instead...Or better yet: Gone to that BIRD SANCTUARY!!

What Kind of Underwear Should I Wear Rik?--Designers Rik Villa and Nathalia JMag--Season 15 Project Runway Episode 10

#2....OMG! Rik's The New JENNI!! Poor little Nathalia... ever since Jenni got the boot, Nathalia has been like a lost puppy, caught in the rain searching of its owner. If we didn't already know that Nathalia was the baby of the group, the editors made it LOUD and CLEAR letting us know how much she needed a new security blanket. So.....Rik to the Rescue! She turned to him for advice for everything. In fact, I was waiting for her to ask him what kind of underwear she should wear for Runway Day!!  Rik was such a trooper, taking the place of Jenni---- and bless his heart for that---- BUT if it was me, I'd be running for the Brother Sewing Room the minute I heard Nathalia's quivering "What should I do?" voice.

Editorial Minnie Mouse and Bird Poop Slash--Designs from Dexter Simmons (L) and Rik Villa (R)--Season 15 Project Runway Episode 10

#3....OMG!  Editorially Confused!! OK, since this was an "Editorial" Challenge, it was just kind of interesante that the two people--Rik and Dexter--who "attempted" to do Editorial, ended up in the bottom. While I give them kudos for trying to step outside of the "design box" and honor the Editorial part of the challenge, Dexter re-hashed his Mickey Mouse exaggerated rounded shoulders jacket  and Rik made a disjointed dress that left everyone--except the Marie Claire editor--dazed and editorially confused.

Designer Cornelius Ortiz and his design (top photo)--Season 15 Project Runway Episode 10

#4....OMG! Cornelius' Comeback!! While Cornelius' shift dress wasn't particularly Editorial, it was definitely creative in its design. The colorful leather inset panels and interesting seaming were unexpected and enough to give him the Power Diva Editorial Win. In addition, it was a surprise that he was inspired by a golf course, of all things. Luckily, his model and design looked more Upper East Side Chic as opposed to Caddy Shack Putting Green! This was a nice redemption for Cornelius who was saved by Tim only 2 episodes ago. Even I was like "Really Tim, this is your SAVE?" But, yeah, at least in this challenge, he got his "How you like me now!" moment.

Wonky Side-Bo*b: Nathalia JMag and her "Superwoman" Design--Season 15 Project Runway Episode 10

Bye: Designer Dexter Simmons--Season 15 Project Runway Episode 10

#5....OMG! Double Auf Wiedersehen!! We knew Nathalia was in trouble with that Star Trek-Meets-Britney Spears Wonky Side-boob Superwoman ensemble (UFFFFF! that was BAAAD!). But Dexter gave her a run for her money with his Gothic Minnie Mouse Jacket Re-do with a lace negligee dress underneath. Power Goth Disney Lingerie, anyone?? Well, the moment Heidi declared that Nathalia was OUT, and Dexter remained onstage...I thought "You In Danger GURL!". My instincts were right and Dexter became the victim of this season's Double Elimination :(

Here's my MyLifetime.com FULL RECAP of this week's episode of "Project Runway":

Season 15, Episode 10 Recap: Power Trip

It seems hard to believe that we are already at episode 10 of Season 15! And as this season moves along briskly, the designers continue to dwindle in numbers and with the conclusion of this week’s episode, we are left with a surprise total of only six designers! How did we get here? Sit back, relax and join me for a ride in the “Project Runway” helicopter!

The designers are in their humble abodes where they just happen to find a note from Heidi. The note reads, “For the next challenge, be sure to have your heads out of the clouds. After all, you can’t wing it and win it.” As they leave, everyone is taking wild guesses as to whether they will be A) hot air ballooning, or B) designing in a bird’s sanctuary and using feathers. As it turns out, it’s none of the above. They all gather in wonderment at a heliport as Tim and a special guest land down in their very own “Project Runway”-branded helicopter...

PROJECT RUNWAY....My TOP 5 OMG MOMENTS: Ep. 8

Nick Verreos "Top 5 OMG Moments of Project Runway Season 15"--Episode 8, YouTube

For this week's episode of Lifetime Network's "Project Runway", the designers had to design looks for what Tim Gunn called "the First EVER Pop-up Store!". There was LOTS of drama, Evil Step Sisters (Erin and Dexter) and Cinderella (Cornelius)...and in addition, a TIM SAVE!!

Pop-up First??--Nick Verreos "Top 5 OMG Moments of Project Runway Season 15"--Episode 8, YouTube

There is lots to discuss so--including a certain similarity to a challenge I was part of back in Season 2...Let's begin with my "Top 5 OMG Moments" of the episode via YouTube:

This past week on Lifetime's "Project Runway", it was time for the designers to attend an Absolut Elyx party. As we know, there's no such thing as a party on "Project Runway" since this one, of course, involved a challenge: To create a "luxurious" Cocktail Dress. For some reason, a lot of this season's remaining designers struggled...

PROJECT RUNWAY....My TOP 5 OMG MOMENTS: Ep. 4

Nick Verreos "OMG Top 5 Moments of Project Runway Episode 4" on YouTube

It's time for my weekly RECAP of Season 15 "Project Runway"! First up, it's my "Top 5 OMG Moments" of the episode. The challenge this week was to create Swimwear for the "Heidi Klum Swim" line. As always, they made a big hullabaloo about how the Winner would have their look manufactured and sold as part of Miss Heidi's line. But, they (as always) didn't mention anything about that said winning designer getting any percentage of the sold swimsuits #JustSaying. Besides that, there were definitely some things I wanted to get off my chest about this episode so...
